My pilgrimage to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Every year on May 12^th thousands upon thousands of people make a 15 km (9.3mi.) pilgrimage to the Buddhist temple on top of the Doi Suthep outside of Chiang Mai.  If you’d like to learn more about this temple, its legends and history, click here.

毎年の５月１２日に何千人はチェンマイの外でのドイステープの上の寺に１５キロ巡礼する。その寺の伝説と歴史が知りたかったら、ここにクリックしてください。

Initially, I was hesitant to undergo this pilgrimage due to the distance and the prospect of returning home at 2 or 3 in the morning but I eventually caved and went with my friends from the gym at 7:30.  Before we left we saw a lot of lightning but we kept on going.

Traditionally, people undergo this pilgrimage on foot, walking the entire way up and down the mountain.  We chose to be adventurous and walk up the mountain.  Along the path there were volunteers handing out free bottled water as well as people selling food and trinkets.  Just as we began our ascent, the rain came.  It was an extremely strong storm; it was like walking through a wall of water.  Most people didn’t have umbrellas or ponchos, including us.  We took cover where possible and pushed forward when we couldn’t hide.

As we got closer to the top we found monks blessing pilgrims. For a modest 20 baht fee, the monks tied a sai sin (Buddhist holy string/bracelet) on your wrist and gave a yant cloth depicting the famous monk that the pilgrimage is dedicated to.

After a number of hours we finally made it to the temple’s base.

From there, we had a very long trip up an equally long flight of stairs in order to reach the temple proper.

そこから、寺に到達するために非常に長い階段を登らなくちゃいけなかった。

Once we made it to the temple, we were able to rest for a while.  This is a very famous temple and one that charges foreign people 20 baht to enter, which I’m not too fond of.  Probably due to the event, no one was collecting money this time.

寺に着いたら、しばらく休めた。この寺はとても有名から、外国人が２０バーツの入場料払わなくちゃいけない。それを大嫌い。おそらくイベントだから、当時、誰もお金を集めなかった。

Rest and relaxation/休息

After wandering around for a bit, we started our way back down to the base of the temple.  This was a difficult feat!  We decided to push our way to the side of the narrow staircase and jump over the side.  I ended up running down the steep slope, dodging trees and people.  At the base we all decided to take a songthaew down the mountain to Chiang Mai University and walk home.

しばらくうろついた後、僕たちは寺の基底に下って開始した。それは難しい偉業だったよ！狭い階段の側に到達するためにプッシュして、それからサイドを飛び越えると決めた。僕は木や人を避けながら、急な斜面を駆け下りた。チャインマイ大学に僕たちは山下りソンテウに乗って、それから、家に歩いてと決めた。

I didn’t get home until about 3 in the morning.  I planned to go back during the day and explore the temple more thoroughly, but it never happened.  Overall, I’m glad I undertook the pilgrimage; it was a good experience and one I probably will not have the chance to do again. 

約３午前までは家に帰ってなかった。寺をじっくり探りたかったから。日中に寺に戻るつもりだったが。戻れなかった。全体的に、僕は巡礼を行いたうれしい。それは良い経験だった。おそらく再び行く機会がない。
